Manual & automatic
in Burnham

Choose weekly manual or automatic driving lessons across CM0 at identical rates (£38/hr pay-as-you-go, £35.90/hr on 40 hours), or book a fast-track intensive course focused on Southend-on-Sea Driving Test Centre routes.

OPTION 1 / MANUAL TUITION · CM0

Manual driving lessons (CM0)

Lessons here are taught in manual cars, and the Dengie gives them a particular shape. Long straight B roads with slow bends want early gear choice and steady speed rather than constant shifting, and the quayside end of the town wants the opposite. Learning both in the same hour is normal in Burnham.

Book manual tuition
OPTION 2 / AUTOMATIC TUITION · £38/HR

Automatic driving lessons (CM0)

Automatic lessons are not currently covered in Burnham-on-Crouch. The cars matched to CM0 postcodes are manual, and this page would rather say that than take a booking and give it back. Put your postcode in and the booking system answers for your street rather than for the town, so any change appears there before it appears here.

Book automatic tuition
OPTION 3 / FAST-TRACK COURSES

Intensive driving courses (CM0)

Tell us what you want when you book: a female driving instructor in Burnham-on-Crouch, an unhurried start, or somebody who takes learners out to the Southend routes regularly. A DVSA licence and a DBS check are both confirmed before a learner gets into the car.

Compare intensive courses
OPTION 4 / REFRESHER, MOTORWAY & PASS PLUS

Refresher & motorway sessions (CM0)

If a test date is closing in faster than one hour a week can keep up with, an intensive course runs the hours together instead. It is a separate booking with its own prices. Swapping a date with another learner is free and anonymous on both sides.

Test routes in
Burnham

Two B roads in, a river with no bridge, and a choice to make about the test.

Learner driver practising junction observations with an independent DVSA-licensed driving instructor in CM0
STAGE 1 · LOCAL ROADS & NURSERY GRIDS

The B1010, the B1021 and the quay

Burnham is served by the B1010 towards Maldon and the B1021 through Southminster to Bradwell-on-Sea, and by nothing larger. For a learner that means the first fast road is a good way off, and the hours nearer home go on single carriageway bends, farm entrances and the tight streets running down to the quay. It is a fine place to learn observation and a poor place to learn dual carriageway driving, so both have to be planned in.

STAGE 2 · PEAK TRAFFIC & JUNCTION TIMING

The ferry that saves the best part of an hour

The foot ferry between Burnham Yacht Harbour and Essex Marina on Wallasea crosses in about ten minutes, and the same journey by car takes around an hour, because the Crouch has no road bridge below Battlesbridge. It runs six days a week from Good Friday to the end of September. Nobody drives across, which is exactly why lesson cover on the far bank depends on the instructor rather than on the map.

STAGE 3 · PRACTICAL TEST CENTRE ROUTES

Tickfield Avenue, or further for a better number

Southend-on-Sea is the nearest centre, at the Tickfield Centre on Tickfield Avenue, and the DVSA publishes 47.0% for it on 7,526 tests. Basildon is 49.1%, Colchester 50.6% and Chelmsford 55.4% on 9,107 tests. The gap between the nearest and the strongest is more than eight points, and the strongest is the longest drive. Those are the published numbers, and which of them is worth the extra journey is a decision only you can make.

STAGE 4 · LOCAL TEST INTELLIGENCE

A clubhouse that went to New York

The Royal Corinthian Yacht Club on the quay was built in 1931 to Joseph Emberton's design and chosen to represent Britain at the Museum of Modern Art's International Exhibition of Modern Architecture in New York the following year. It looks like a ship's bridge coming through the sea wall. Burnham Week has been sailed here since 1893, and the town fills for it.

For Burnham On Crouch (CM0) learners: Manual and automatic driving lessons in Burnham-on-Crouch (CM0) cost the same: £38.00 per hour pay-as-you-go (£76 for a 2-hour starter session). Block bookings reduce the hourly rate to £37.00/hr for 10 hours (£370), £36.30/hr for 20 hours (£726), £36.10/hr for 30 hours (£1,083), and £35.90/hr for 40 hours (£1,436, saving £84). A £1.99 booking admin fee applies.

For Burnham On Crouch (CM0) learners: According to the official DVSA 2025/26 practical test dataset, Southend-on-Sea Driving Test Centre (Tickfield Centre, Tickfield Avenue, Southend-on-Sea, SS2 6LL) recorded a 47.0% overall pass rate across 7,526 tests, compared with the 51.2% Great Britain average. Manual candidates achieved 49.5%, automatic candidates achieved 41.0%, and first-attempt candidates achieved 51.9%.

For Burnham On Crouch (CM0) learners: The nearest active official DVSA / Pearson VUE car theory test centre for Burnham-on-Crouch (CM0) learners is Chelmsford Theory Test Centre at Second Floor, Grosvenor House, 51 New London Road, Chelmsford, CM2 0ND (6.5 miles via A12 / A414 /A130). The official GOV.UK car theory test fee is £23.00, and every Rated Driving learner gets free access to our DVSA Theory & Hazard Perception App.

For Burnham On Crouch (CM0) learners: They are not the same trade. Southend is the short drive and publishes 47.0%. Chelmsford is the long one through Latchingdon and Danbury and publishes 55.4%. A pass rate is an average across every candidate at a centre, not a forecast for you, and the strongest predictor is still whether you have practised the roads you will be tested on. Look at both numbers, think about where your hours have gone, and pick.

For Burnham On Crouch (CM0) learners: Not at present. The instructors matched to CM0 postcodes teach in manual cars, and this page says so rather than taking a booking it cannot honour. Enter your postcode and the booking system answers for your own street, which is where any change would appear first.

For Burnham On Crouch (CM0) learners: No. Rated Driving is an agent that matches learners to independent instructors already covering their postcode. The DVSA licence and the DBS check are confirmed before anyone is offered, a female instructor can be asked for, and the money is held until the lesson has been taught.

For Burnham On Crouch (CM0) learners: Creeksea, Ostend, Stoneyhills, Southminster, Althorne, Asheldham and Southwick on the north bank, and Canewdon, the two Pagleshams, Ballards Gore and Barling across the river. The south bank villages are close in a straight line and a long way by road, so the postcode decides what is realistic rather than the map.

For Burnham On Crouch (CM0) learners: Waiting times move constantly, so read the live figure on GOV.UK at the moment you book. Two things stay put: a practical test may be reserved up to 24 weeks ahead, and there is no official queue or priority register at any centre. Burnham learners sometimes take a Southend date simply because it appeared first. If the one you hold does not suit, the free Driving Test Swap looks for a learner who would rather have it and offers you theirs.

For Burnham On Crouch (CM0) learners: The DVSA's research gives about 45 hours of professional lessons plus 22 hours of private practice. Burnham usually needs a few more than a town learner, because the busy roads you will be tested on are not the roads outside your door, and that time has to be driven rather than described.

For Burnham On Crouch (CM0) learners: Yes, and it is worth saying so when you book. The lanes out towards Stoneyhills and Asheldham are quiet enough for a first hour to be genuinely calm, and the trip towards heavier traffic can wait until you ask for it.
