An intensive course works brilliantly for the right learner and badly for the wrong one. Find your column.
Washington's modern grid layout and its position as a planned new town since the 1960s creates a unique driving environment where wide dual carriageways meet residential estates designed around roundabouts and controlled junctions. The town's network of distributor roads, including the busy A1231 Sunderland Highway and the A182, means learners here need to master confident lane discipline and navigation around multiple interconnected roundabouts in quick succession. An intensive driving course lets you pass your test in days or weeks rather than months, making it the ideal choice for those who want to build competence quickly across Washington's distinctive road system.
Your intensive course will cover all essential skills in concentrated sessions, allowing you to progress rapidly from quiet residential streets to busier arterial routes. You'll practise manoeuvres in controlled environments before tackling the faster flowing traffic and Biddick Lane, building experience with the numerous roundabouts that characterise Washington's layout. The concentrated nature of intensive tuition means you'll retain skills more effectively than with lessons spread over many months, developing the muscle memory and decisi types from housing estates to major junctions.
Washington's historic centres, including Washington Old Hall where George Washington's ancestors lived, sit alongside modern developments around The Galleries shopping centre. Your instructor will use recognisable landmarks like the Penshaw Monument visible from many approach roads to help build your local navigation skills, ensuring you can drive confidently through all districts from Concord to Oxclose.
Your intensive course will prepare you for your practical test at the Sunderland test centre, the nearest DVSA facility serving Washington candidates. Your Rated Driving instructor knows the test routes thoroughly and will ensure you're completely familiar with the roads examiners use, including challenging sections requiring sound judgement at busy times. You'll practise the exact junctions, roundabouts and road conditions you'll encounter on test day, giving you the confidence that comes from real familiarity with the local area.

Washington learners typically book their practical at Sunderland, around four miles east. Routes there cover a mix of residential streets and dual carriageways, so lesson plans usually work up to faster-flowing sections once the basics are solid. South Shields is the second-nearest option, roughly five and a half miles north, with a slightly higher pass rate and routes that include coastal roads and suburban estates.
Elswick sits around seven miles north-west, on the Newcastle side of the Tyne. Pass rates there run lower than the other two centres, so most Washington learners stick with Sunderland or South Shields unless those are fully booked several weeks out.
Sunderland is the closest theory centre to Washington, around five and a half miles east and straightforward to reach by car or public transport. Newcastle is almost the same distance at six miles north-west. Bishop Auckland is much further out at nearly eighteen miles south, so only worth considering if the closer centres have no available slots.
The sensible order for an intensive course.
Sitting your theory test before you start an intensive course is the fastest route to a full licence. You will not need to wait for theory results between practical lessons, and your instructor can plan around a fixed practical test date.
Driving Test Success is the app we recommend for theory prep. It covers every DVSA revision question, all hazard perception clips, and full mock tests, with content for both manual and automatic learners.
