Intensive isn’t the right fit for everyone. Here’s how to know whether it suits where you are right now.
Stoke-on-Trent's unique character as a city built across six towns means learner drivers here face an excellent variety of road conditions, from the winding routes through Burslem and Tunstall to the faster-paced A500 that cuts through the heart of the Potteries. This geography creates natural training ground for developing well-rounded driving skills, though it also means learners need exposure to everything from narrow residential streets to dual carriageways. An intensive driving course with Rated Driving tackles this challenge head-on, letting you pass your test in days or weeks rather than months by concentrating all essential skills into focused, daily sessions.
Our intensive courses cover every road type you will encounter in Stoke, building your confidence through repeated practice on the local network. You will master clutch control on the steep inclines around Hanley, navigate roundabouts along the A50 and A500, and develop hazard perception skills and Newcastle Street. The concentrated format means you progress rapidly without the long gaps between traditional weekly lessons that cause skills to fade. Each session builds directly on the last, with your instructor tailoring the programme to ensure you experience residential areas, industrial zones, and the more challenging junctions around Festival Park.
Training in Stoke gives you character-building experience with the area's distinctive features, from the historic bottle kilns that mark the pottery industry heritage to modern developments around the city centre. You will drive past landmarks like the Trentham Gardens area and learn to handle the variety of traffic conditions across all six towns, ensuring you are a capable, adaptable driver ready for any situation.
Your Rated Driving instructor will prepare you thoroughly for your practical test at the Cobridge DVSA test centre. They know the test routes intimately and will ensure you practise the specific manoeuvres, junctions, and road situations that examiners use in this area. The intensive format means you take your test while everything is fresh in your mind, significantly improving your chances of a first-time pass.

Stoke learners typically book their practical at Crewe, around twelve miles north-west, though pass rates there run below the national average so it pays to be fully prepared before test day. Stafford is roughly fourteen miles south and posts a higher pass rate, making it a sensible alternative when Crewe slots are tight or if routes around the Stafford area suit your lesson plan better.
Macclesfield sits around seventeen miles north and runs at close to the national average, so it works as a third option when the closer centres are fully booked. All three tend to test a mix of residential streets, dual carriageways and roundabouts, so your instructor will likely cover those features across your lessons regardless of which centre you choose.
Stoke has its own theory test centre just over a mile north of the town centre, making it the obvious first choice for local learners. Crewe is the next-closest option around twelve miles north-west, while Stockport sits roughly twenty-seven miles north and only makes sense if both Stoke and Crewe are fully booked.
The sensible order for an intensive course.
Sitting your theory test before you start an intensive course is the fastest route to a full licence. You will not need to wait for theory results between practical lessons, and your instructor can plan around a fixed practical test date.
Driving Test Success is the app we recommend for theory prep. It covers every DVSA revision question, all hazard perception clips, and full mock tests, with content for both manual and automatic learners.
