Learning to drive in Chatham means mastering the busy A2 corridor and the complex junction at Luton Arches, where multiple lanes, fast-moving traffic and merging vehicles can overwhelm new drivers. An intensive driving course with Rated Driving builds your confidence through concentrated practice on these challenging routes, ensuring you develop the judgement and positioning needed to handle high-speed dual carriageways and intimidating roundabouts. Rather than spreading lessons over months, you'll tackle these demands in focused sessions that accelerate your progress and get you test-ready in days or weeks.
Your intensive course covers the full spectrum of Chatham's driving environments in rapid succession. You'll start with quieter residential streets around Walderslade and Princes Park, then progress to navigating the retail traffic around Pentagon Shopping Centre and the congesti. Sessions quickly advance to dual carriageway driving on the A2 and A229, handling lane discipline at speed, before refining your skills on rural roads towards Hale and Blue Bell Hill. This compressed, systematic approach means every session builds directly on the last, with no long gaps for skills to fade.
Chatham's rich history is evident throughout your lessons, from driving past the Historic Dockyard with its naval heritage to navigating near Fort Amherst, one of Britain's best-preserved Napoleonic forts. The town sits at the heart of the Medway Towns, and your instructor will use these local landmarks as reference points while teaching you to read the road and anticipate hazards in this diverse urban setting.
Your test will be conducted from the Gillingham test centre, and examiners expect confident handling of the demanding local conditions. They'll assess your ability to cope with the A2's fast traffic, your positioning through multi-lane roundabouts, and your awareness in the busy town centre. Your Rated Driving instructor knows the test routes intimately and will ensure you practise the specific manoeuvres and road sections that examiners favour, from parallel parking in tight spots to emerging safely onto main roads during peak times.

Chatham learners typically book their practical at Gillingham, around three miles east, which posts a pass rate comfortably above the national average. Test routes cover the residential streets around the Medway towns and sections of nearby A-roads, so lesson plans usually focus on building confidence in those areas during the final weeks before test day.
Maidstone sits around eight miles south and runs at a slightly lower pass rate, making it a solid alternative when Gillingham slots are tight. Tilbury is the third nearest option at roughly nine miles north-west, across the Thames in Essex, where pass rates run lower so most local learners only consider it as a backup when the Kent centres are fully booked.
The Chatham theory centre is less than half a mile north-west of the town centre, making it the obvious first choice for local learners. Southend is the next-closest option around fourteen miles north-east, across the Thames estuary. Sidcup sits roughly eighteen miles west and is only worth considering if Chatham is fully booked.
Driving Test Success covers every DVSA revision question, hazard perception clip, and mock test you need before booking your practical.
