What lessons
actually cost
CO13 pays the CO rate, and that rate is pulled from the booking system as the page loads. Bigger blocks carry a lower hourly figure, and asking for an automatic does not change the price.

you learn
Rated Driving matches learners to independent instructors rather than employing them, so each of these goes to somebody DVSA-licensed who already drives CO13 and the Clacton test routes.
Manual lessons
The level crossing at the top of Connaught Avenue is the single thing worth practising in a manual here. Coming to a stop on the approach, holding the car while a train goes through and pulling away cleanly with a queue behind you is a hill start without the hill, and it happens several times an hour. A manual licence also keeps automatics available to you later.
Book manual lessonsAutomatic driving lessons in Frinton-on-Sea
An automatic is the same price as a manual on CO rates. With no gears to manage at the crossing or on the pull out of Kirby Cross, the hour goes further on observation, which is what the Clacton test actually asks for.

Female driving instructor in Frinton-on-Sea
Ask at the booking stage for a female driving instructor in Frinton-on-Sea, a patient first few hours, or somebody who drives into Clacton for tests every week. The DVSA licence and the DBS check are both settled before a name is offered.

An intensive course puts the hours back to back instead of one a week, which suits a date already in the diary. It is booked and priced separately from lessons. If you want to move that date, a swap with another learner is free and neither side is identified.

pass rate
Frinton has no centre of its own, so tests are sat at Clacton, 4.6 miles down the coast road. It is the nearest by a long way and not the strongest, so the DVSA figures for all four centres in reach are set out together.

Take a test date
you would actually pick.
Frinton learners are sharing one small centre with the whole of the Tendring coast, so a date that suits a learner on this side of the peninsula is often the wrong date for somebody the other side of it. A swap costs nothing and both names stay hidden.
Nothing about your booking changes unless you both say yes. DVSA makes the swap on the call, not us.

What has to be true for a swap
- You both need a car practical already booked
- At least 10 full working days before the earlier test Monday to Saturday count as working days. Sundays and public holidays do not.
- You both need one of your two DVSA changes left Nobody outside DVSA can check how many you have left, so we ask.
- Same test type and fee band A weekday test can only swap with another weekday test.
- The other test is at your centre or close to it Your centre, one of the 3 centres nearest to it, or the centre you first booked at.
Free, no payment details, and neither learner ever sees the other's name. It is new, so the more learners who list a date, the faster it finds you one.

Learning to drive
in Frinton-on-Sea
One crossing, one avenue and one road west account for most of what a Frinton learner needs.

The crossing, Connaught Avenue, the B1033
The railway cuts across the top of Connaught Avenue, and until 2009 it was closed by manned wooden gates, which is why a pair of gates still appears on the town's emblem and the originals now stand in the station gardens. Barriers replaced them, and the queue they create is part of learning here. Everything else in Frinton leads to the B1033, the road back through Kirby Cross to Thorpe-le-Soken and the A133.
Trains, the avenue and the summer
The barrier cycle sets the rhythm of the whole town, and the avenue backs up behind it at the times the branch line is busiest. Connaught Avenue is also the shopping street, so parking manoeuvres in front of an audience are unavoidable here. Mid morning, out of the school run and out of the August visitor traffic, is the easiest slot to learn in.
Carnarvon Road, Clacton
Tests are at Clacton, on Carnarvon Road, 4.6 miles south west, reached either along the coast through Holland-on-Sea or inland via Kirby Cross. The centre publishes 48.2% on 4,840 tests. Ask for hours on the Clacton side of the peninsula well before the date, because the roads there are nothing like the ones outside your door.
The town with rules
Frinton was developed under covenants set by Richard Powell Cooper that barred boarding houses and pubs, and the town stayed dry until Shepherd Neame opened the Lock and Barrel on Connaught Avenue in September 2000. The Greensward in front of the Esplanade was laid to hold the land together. The effect on driving is real: no arcades, no seafront strip, and very little of the traffic a resort usually generates.

Frinton-on-Sea lesson questions
Prices, the Clacton test centre, the level crossing and coverage across CO13.
CO13 pays the CO rate of £38 an hour, the same for manual and automatic. Ten hours is £370, twenty hours is £726 at £36.30 an hour, and thirty hours is £1083. The numbers come from the live booking system rather than a fixed price list.
Clacton-on-Sea, on Carnarvon Road, 4.6 miles south west. It publishes 48.2% on 4,840 tests in the DVSA 2025/26 figures. Ipswich is 13.7 miles north at 62.3%, Colchester 13.8 miles west at 50.6% and Southend-on-Sea 30.2 miles away at 47.0%.
Clacton is 4.6 miles away and Ipswich 13.7, and the DVSA publishes 48.2% against 62.3%. That is a wide gap and it is honest to say so, but a centre average is not a prediction for one learner, and Ipswich routes are town driving of a different kind. Whichever you choose, drive it first with your instructor.
Yes, at the same hourly rate as manual. Clacton-on-Sea, 4.6 miles south west, passed 43.8% of 1,243 automatic tests in the DVSA 2025/26 figures, against 49.7% for manual. Say automatic at the booking stage. Automatic availability is thinner than manual in CO13, so give it a week or so rather than expecting a slot tomorrow.
No. Rated Driving is an agent rather than a school. What you book goes to an independent instructor already working your CO13 postcode, whose DVSA licence and DBS check are settled beforehand, and the payment is held back until the lesson has been taught.
Kirby Cross, Kirby-le-Soken and Great Holland immediately around the town, Thorpe-le-Soken at the junction, then Weeley Heath, Row Heath, Great Bentley, Alresford, Thorrington and Frating heading west along the branch line and the A133. Enter a postcode and the check is done on the street, not the town.
Waiting times move constantly, so look at the live figure on GOV.UK when you are ready to reserve one. Two facts do not change: a practical test can be held up to 24 weeks ahead, and no official queue or priority list exists for an earlier one. Clacton is a small centre, so its dates are taken quickly. If the date you hold no longer works, the free Driving Test Swap looks for a learner who wants it.
The DVSA's own research points to about 45 hours with an instructor plus roughly 22 hours of private practice. Frinton learners often need a few extra hours near the end, because the test is at Clacton and the roads there are busier and faster than anything in CO13.
Yes, and this is a good town for it. Say nervous when you book. The residential roads behind the Esplanade are wide, slow and almost empty out of season, which is a gentler start than most learners in Essex get.
Yes, ask for a refresher. The usual requests here are the drive into Clacton and the A133, and confidence at the crossing when there is a queue behind you.
Yes. Pass Plus is six modules taken after the test: town, all weather, rural roads, night, dual carriageways and motorway. Several insurers recognise it. The rural module is straightforward here, since the lanes towards Great Holland and Beaumont start where the houses stop.
They can. A learner may use a motorway with a fully qualified instructor in a dual-controlled car. There is none on this peninsula, so in practice it means a planned run to the A12 beyond Colchester, taken as one long lesson.
Yes, both are CO13 and both are on the way in and out of Frinton. Kirby Cross has the station before Frinton's on the branch line, and Kirby-le-Soken sits on the road towards the Naze. Instructors covering Frinton work all of it.
Rated Driving is not a driving school. We match you with independent, DVSA-licensed driving instructors in Frinton-on-Sea. No instructor page says it mostly covers Frinton-on-Sea. Instructors covering Frinton work CO13 through Kirby Cross and Kirby-le-Soken, then west along the B1033 and the A133 towards Weeley and Great Bentley. Both gearboxes are covered, and the postcode you enter settles which instructors can reach you. The test centre on this page is Clacton-on-Sea test centre (Clacton-on-Sea · 4.6 mi south west · 4,840 tests a year). One crossing, one avenue and one road west account for most of what a Frinton learner needs. Every instructor is DBS-checked before they take a learner, and we hold your payment until after the lesson.
You can ask for a female driving instructor in Frinton-on-Sea when you book. No instructor profile states that they cover Frinton-on-Sea, so no name is added here. The price on this page is £38 an hour, and automatic lessons are the same price. The same booking covers Great Holland, Thorpe Cross, Landermere, Landermere Wharf and Thorpe-le-Soken. Lessons for that match use Clacton-on-Sea test centre (Clacton-on-Sea · 4.6 mi south west · 4,840 tests a year). If nobody suitable has space, we tell you rather than quietly matching you with someone else.
