Driving Lessons in Brent

Brent is the borough where the North Circular, the A5 and a ninety thousand seat stadium share the same few square miles. Learning here means learning to read traffic that changes character depending on what is on at Wembley. Tell us your postcode and we match you with an independent DVSA-licensed instructor, and we hold your payment until after the lesson.

Take a test date
you would actually pick.

Every test from Brent means a run north out of the borough, so a date at an awkward hour costs you more here than it would somewhere with a centre on the doorstep. Another learner may be glad to take yours and hand you theirs.

Nothing about your booking changes unless you both say yes. DVSA makes the swap on the call, not us.

What has to be true for a swap
  • You both need a car practical already booked
  • At least 10 full working days before the earlier test Monday to Saturday count as working days. Sundays and public holidays do not.
  • You both need one of your two DVSA changes left Nobody outside DVSA can check how many you have left, so we ask.
  • Same test type and fee band A weekday test can only swap with another weekday test.

you learn

However you want to learn, it is one booking, matched to independent DVSA-licensed instructors covering Brent.

04.1 / MANUAL

Manual lessons

The A5 through Kilburn is stop-start for miles, which is where clutch control stops being a drill and becomes something you do without thinking. A manual licence lets you drive both types of car.

Book manual lessons
04.2 / AUTOMATIC

Automatic lessons

Automatic costs the same as manual here. On the A5 and the North Circular the difficulty is lane discipline and gap judgement, not gear changes, so an automatic puts the whole lesson into the hard part.

If weekly lessons keep getting displaced by shifts, an intensive course puts the hours into consecutive days instead. Test-date swaps between learners are free, and you never share your name.

Learning to drive
in Brent

No test centre of its own, a stadium in the middle, and the North Circular across it.

Driving instructor and learner beside a dual-control car on a residential street
Roads your instructor will use

The North Circular and the A5

The A406 crosses the borough as a fast multi-lane road with short slip roads and heavy goods traffic, and the A5 runs the other way as a slow, congested high street. Instructors here teach them as two different skills, because they are, and they build up to the A406 rather than starting on it.

When to book

Check what is on at Wembley

A stadium event moves tens of thousands of people through the borough, with road closures around the ground and heavy traffic on every approach for hours either side. Instructors who teach Brent check the fixture list, and it is the one thing genuinely worth asking about before you pick a slot.

Getting to the test

North to Hendon

Your test is a few miles north in Barnet. Getting there takes you up through Kingsbury and across the A5 or the A406, which is useful practice in itself. Ask for a lesson on the roads around the centre before test day rather than seeing them first on the morning.

Worth knowing

Park Royal is a lesson in itself

Park Royal is one of the largest industrial estates in Europe and its roads carry articulated lorries all day. Instructors use it deliberately, because learning to give a lorry room to turn is not something you can be told, only shown.

Brent lesson questions

Straight answers on prices, test centres and booking in Brent.

Lessons are £40 an hour across NW10, HA9 and NW2, and automatic costs exactly the same as manual. Ten hours is £389 and twenty is £764, which brings it to £38.20 an hour. The figures come from the booking system, so the price here is the price you book.

Hendon, a few miles north in Barnet, is the usual choice, because Brent has no test centre of its own. Its current DVSA figures are at the top of this page. Mill Hill publishes an identical rate a little further north, and Southall is the western option and lower than both.

Yes, on event days. Road closures around the stadium and heavy traffic on every approach make the hours either side a poor time to learn. Instructors who teach the borough plan around the fixture list, and it is worth mentioning your preferred days when you book.

Yes, at the same price as manual. On the A5 and the North Circular the hard part is lane choice and gap judgement rather than gear changes, so an automatic lets the whole lesson go into that. Say automatic when you book.

No. Rated Driving is an agent, not a school, so you are matched with an independent instructor rather than assigned one on a rota. We cover NW10, HA9, NW2 and the surrounding codes, hold your payment until after each lesson, then pass it on. Every instructor is DVSA-licensed and DBS-checked, and you can ask for a female instructor when you book.

Willesden, Harlesden, Kilburn, Neasden, Kingsbury, Queen's Park, Cricklewood, Dollis Hill, Brondesbury and Alperton among others. Wembley sits in the Middlesex HA area and has its own page. 11 of the borough's 12 postcode districts are shared with a neighbouring borough, so enter your postcode and we check who covers your exact street.

It can be. The A406 crosses the borough and local routes use it, so any instructor teaching here will have you driving it well before test day. It is fast, multi-lane and has short slip roads, which is why it is built up to rather than started on.

Yes. Say nervous when you book and we match you with a patient instructor. The residential streets around Kingsbury and Preston are quiet enough to spend several hours on before you go near the A5 or the North Circular.

Yes. Say refresher when you book. The North Circular is the single most common request here, usually from people who hold a licence but have avoided it for years.

Yes. Pass Plus is the DVSA's six-module course for new licence holders, covering motorway, dual carriageway, rural and night driving, and some insurers reduce premiums for it. Instructors covering Brent run it, and the M1 is close enough to make the motorway module straightforward.

DVSA research puts it at 45 hours of professional lessons plus 22 hours of private practice, and learners who get that private practice are markedly more likely to pass first time. Many learners here do not have a car to practise in, so the paid hours carry more of the work than the national average assumes. Your instructor will give you an honest count after assessing you.

It moves weekly, so check GOV.UK on the day you book. Two things stay true: tests can be booked up to 24 weeks ahead, and there is no official waiting list or cancellation list. Mill Hill is worth checking alongside Hendon, because the two publish the same rate and their availability differs. If you already hold a date and want an earlier one, our free Driving Test Swap matches you with another learner who wants yours.
