Bromley test centre
pass rate
Lewisham has no test centre in the current DVSA release. Bromley to the south east is the usual choice. These are its official DVSA figures.
DVSA 2025/26 · 13,228 tests · Bromley · 4.4 mi south east. No Lewisham centre is currently published

Take a test date
you would actually pick.
Every test from Lewisham is a run out of the borough, and Sidcup's dates in particular go fast because of its rate. If yours does not suit, another learner may be glad to take it and hand you theirs.
Nothing about your booking changes unless you both say yes. DVSA makes the swap on the call, not us.

What has to be true for a swap
- You both need a car practical already booked
- At least 10 full working days before the earlier test Monday to Saturday count as working days. Sundays and public holidays do not.
- You both need one of your two DVSA changes left Nobody outside DVSA can check how many you have left, so we ask.
- Same test type and fee band A weekday test can only swap with another weekday test.
Free, no payment details, and neither learner ever sees the other's name. It is new, so the more learners who list a date, the faster it finds you one.

Choose how
you learn
However you want to learn, it is one booking, matched to independent DVSA-licensed instructors covering Lewisham.
Manual lessons
The climb from Deptford up through Brockley to Forest Hill is a long sustained gradient, which makes hill starts a genuine part of learning here. A manual licence lets you drive both types of car.
Book manual lessonsAutomatic lessons
Automatic costs the same as manual here, and on the borough's hills it removes the thing most learners stall on. For some people that is what turns a plateau back into progress.
Book automatic lessonsChoose your instructor
Say what suits you: a female instructor, extra patience, or an instructor who teaches the Bromley routes rather than only local roads. Every instructor is DVSA-licensed and DBS-checked before they take learners.
Tell us your preferenceIntensive course
With no centre in the borough, weekly lessons spend time getting to the roads that matter. An intensive course concentrates it. Test-date swaps between learners are free, and you never share your name.

Learning to drive
in Lewisham
Instructors teach the hill before the gyratory, and the test is over in Bromley.

The gyratory, and then the hill
Lewisham's town centre gyratory carries the A20 and the A21 through a tight multi-lane system with buses and constant pedestrian crossings. Away from it the ground rises steadily to Forest Hill and Sydenham. Instructors teach the hill first, because the car is a more patient teacher than the gyratory.
The A20 and A21 at the ends of the day
Both trunk roads feed commuter traffic through the borough morning and evening, and the gyratory is where it all meets. Instructors who teach Lewisham will put your early hours mid-morning and save the gyratory for when you can use it.
South east, out of the borough
There is no Lewisham centre in the current release, so your test is a run to Bromley, West Wickham or Sidcup. That drive gives you the suburban roads and roundabouts the test uses, which inner Lewisham does not.
Sidcup is the strongest option in reach
Sidcup publishes 58.7%, the highest of any London test centre, and from most of Lewisham it is a similar distance to Bromley. It is worth asking your instructor which routes they teach before you assume the nearest is the right one.

Lewisham lesson questions
Straight answers on prices, test centres and booking in Lewisham.
Lessons are £40 an hour across SE13, SE23 and SE6, and automatic costs exactly the same as manual. Ten hours is £389 and twenty is £764, which brings it to £38.20 an hour. The figures come from the booking system, so the price here is the price you book.
Not one that DVSA publishes figures for in the current 2025/26 release. Learners here test at Bromley, whose figures are at the top of this page, or at West Wickham or Sidcup. All three are within about six miles.
It is worth asking your instructor. Sidcup publishes 58.7% against Bromley's 52.9%, and from most of Lewisham the two are a comparable distance. The deciding factor is usually which set of routes your instructor teaches most.
Yes, at the same price as manual. It is worth considering here because of the sustained climb from Deptford to Forest Hill, which is where manual learners lose the most hours. Say automatic when you book.
No. Rated Driving is an agent, not a school, so you are matched with an independent instructor rather than assigned one on a rota. We cover SE13, SE23, SE6 and the surrounding codes, hold your payment until after each lesson, then pass it on. Every instructor is DVSA-licensed and DBS-checked, and you can ask for a female instructor when you book.
Lewisham, Catford, Forest Hill, Deptford, Sydenham, Brockley, New Cross, Blackheath, Hither Green and Grove Park among others. 14 of the borough's 15 postcode districts are shared with a neighbouring borough, so enter your postcode and we check who covers your exact street.
Yes. Say nervous when you book and we match you with a patient instructor. The residential streets around Crofton Park and Bellingham are quiet enough for a first few hours, well away from the gyratory.
Yes. Say refresher when you book. Hill starts and the Lewisham gyratory are the two things people most often want the hours spent on here.
Yes. Pass Plus is the DVSA's six-module course for new licence holders, covering motorway, dual carriageway, rural and night driving, and some insurers reduce premiums for it. Instructors covering the borough run it, with the rural and night modules usually done out towards the Kent edge.
They can, before your test if you want. Learners are allowed on motorways in a dual-control car with a fully qualified instructor. From Lewisham the M25 is a run south east, so it usually sits in a longer lesson booked for the purpose.
DVSA research puts it at 45 hours of professional lessons plus 22 hours of private practice, and learners who get that private practice are markedly more likely to pass first time. The hills tend to add a few early on, and some lesson time goes on reaching the test area. Your instructor will give you an honest count after assessing you.
It moves weekly, so check GOV.UK on the day you book. Two things stay true: tests can be booked up to 24 weeks ahead, and there is no official waiting list or cancellation list. Because the borough has no centre, check Bromley, West Wickham and Sidcup together rather than one at a time. If you already hold a date and want an earlier one, our free Driving Test Swap matches you with another learner who wants yours.
