Manual & automatic
in Waltham Abbey
Choose weekly manual or automatic driving lessons across EN9 at identical rates (£38/hr pay-as-you-go, £35.90/hr on 40 hours), or book a fast-track intensive course focused on Enfield (Innova Business Park) Driving Test Centre routes.
Manual driving lessons (EN9)
A manual learner here gets two very different sets of roads: the flat valley floor towards Enfield Lock, where clutch control can be learned without pressure, and the climb east into the forest at Upshire, where it has to work properly. That mix is why local instructors tend to cover both sides within the first few weeks. A manual licence also leaves automatics open to you later.
Book manual tuitionAutomatic driving lessons (EN9)
An automatic is charged at the same EN rate as a manual. With nothing to change, more of the hour goes on the skill the Innova Business Park routes actually examine, which is holding position and speed through business park roads and roundabouts that look simple and are not.
Book automatic tuitionIntensive driving courses (EN9)
Say what you want at the booking stage: a female driving instructor in Waltham Abbey, a slow first hour on the quiet roads near the abbey, or somebody who drives the Innova Business Park test routes weekly. The DVSA licence and the DBS check are both settled before anybody is offered to you.
Compare intensive coursesRefresher & motorway sessions (EN9)
When a booked date is nearer than a weekly hour can handle, an intensive course puts the same hours into consecutive days instead. It is a separate booking with separate prices. If it is the date rather than the practice that is wrong, swapping it with another learner costs nothing and stays anonymous both ways.

Test routes in
Waltham Abbey
A pedestrianised centre, a motorway junction named after the town, and a lane that is crooked on purpose.

The A121, the A112 and the Crooked Mile
The two main roads through the town are the A121 and the A112, and the A112 begins just south of the centre where it meets the A121. North of the town the B194 runs out towards Fishers Green along the stretch everyone calls the Crooked Mile, which is a genuinely useful piece of road to learn on because the bends arrive faster than the sightlines suggest. Sun Street itself is pedestrianised, so the town centre traffic runs around it rather than through it.
Market days and the junction 26 traffic
The market square runs on Tuesdays and Saturdays and fills the streets behind Highbridge Street, where the Art Nouveau town hall stands. Separately, junction 26 of the M25 is reached from the town by Honey Lane, and it loads and unloads at both peaks. Between about ten and two the town is a different proposition, and that is the window to ask an instructor for.
Solar Way, Innova Business Park
The centre is on Solar Way at Innova Business Park, under two miles west across the Lee, and it publishes 53.9% on 8,412 tests, the strongest figure of the four on this page. The routes out of it use business park roads, the Enfield residential grid and the valley crossings, and a Waltham Abbey learner who has practised only on the Essex side will meet half of that for the first time on the day.
Harold, the gunpowder, and the reason the roads
The abbey church holds the burial place of King Harold, who was brought here after Hastings in 1066 and whose memorial stones were set in the 1960s; his tomb itself has never been found. North of the town the Royal Gunpowder Mills occupy around 175 acres of waterways and magazines. Both of those are why the lanes here bend around water and walls instead of running straight, and why a learner has more blind bends to read than the flat map suggests.

The official GOV.UK car theory test fee is £23.00, and every Rated Driving learner gets free access to our DVSA Theory & Hazard Perception App.
For Waltham Abbey (EN9) learners: On the published figures, yes, which is unusual in this part of Essex. Innova Business Park is both the closest centre to EN9 and the one with the strongest rate in the DVSA 2025/26 release, and it is seven points above Loughton and fourteen above Chingford. That removes the trade most of the neighbouring towns have to weigh up. Rated Driving matches instructors and does not arrange the test itself.
For Waltham Abbey (EN9) learners: Yes, at the same EN rate as manual. It suits learners who would rather spend the hour on position and observation, which is what the Innova Business Park routes reward, than on gear selection. Ask for automatic when you book and the postcode decides who is offered. Enfield, 1.8 miles west, passed 50.0% of 3,460 automatic tests in the DVSA 2025/26 figures, against 56.7% for manual.
For Waltham Abbey (EN9) learners: No. Rated Driving is an agent, matching learners with independent instructors. The instructor already covers EN9, has a current DVSA licence and a DBS check confirmed in advance, and receives the fee only once your lesson has been taught. A female instructor can be requested at the booking stage.
For Waltham Abbey (EN9) learners: The town and Upshire on the Essex side, Enfield Lock, Enfield Island Village, Enfield Wash, Enfield Highway, Bullsmoor, Brimsdown, Bulls Cross and Carterhatch across the Lee, and Lower Nazeing, Nazeing and Bumble's Green to the north. Put the postcode in and your street is checked rather than the county it sits in.
For Waltham Abbey (EN9) learners: It moves week to week, so take the live position from GOV.UK when you are ready to book rather than from any figure quoted second hand. Two fixed points: a test can be reserved up to 24 weeks ahead, and there is no official queue or priority register on offer from anybody. Innova Business Park has the best published rate around here, which is why its dates go early, and the free Driving Test Swap tries to pair you with a learner who wants the one you hold.
For Waltham Abbey (EN9) learners: The DVSA's own research says about 45 hours with an instructor plus 22 hours of private practice. Because the test is only a couple of miles away, less of that goes on travelling than in most of the towns around here, but some of it has to be spent on the Enfield side of the Lee rather than only on Essex roads.
For Waltham Abbey (EN9) learners: Yes. They are across the river in EN3 but are a short drive from the town and are worked by the same instructors covering EN9. They also sit next to the test centre, which makes them the obvious place to spend the hours before the date.
