Manual & automatic
in Stanford-le-Hope

Choose weekly manual or automatic driving lessons across SS17 at identical rates (£38/hr pay-as-you-go, £35.90/hr on 40 hours), or book a fast-track intensive course focused on Basildon Driving Test Centre routes.

OPTION 1 / MANUAL TUITION · SS17

Manual driving lessons (SS17)

The ground rises sharply out of the marsh at Horndon on the Hill and again at Fobbing, so a manual learner here gets real hill work within a few minutes of home instead of having to go looking for it. A manual licence also leaves automatic cars open to you afterwards, and it remains the usual first choice across SS17.

Book manual tuition
OPTION 2 / AUTOMATIC TUITION · £38/HR

Automatic driving lessons (SS17)

Automatic costs the same as manual on SS rates. Around the Stanford interchange and The Manorway the difficult part is judging gaps against heavy vehicles that accelerate slowly and stop slowly, and taking the gearbox out of it leaves the whole hour for that.

Book automatic tuition
OPTION 3 / FAST-TRACK COURSES

Intensive driving courses (SS17)

Tell us the preference at the booking stage: a female driving instructor in Stanford-le-Hope, an unhurried start, or somebody who works the Basildon routes weekly rather than only the Thurrock side. Licence and DBS checks are completed before an instructor is put in front of a learner.

Compare intensive courses
OPTION 4 / REFRESHER, MOTORWAY & PASS PLUS

Refresher & motorway sessions (SS17)

Shift work and port work do not fit a weekly hour at the same time each week, and that is the case an intensive course answers: the same hours run over consecutive days instead. It is a separate booking with its own prices and its own page.

Test routes in
Stanford-le-Hope

One interchange on the A13 governs almost everything about driving in and out of Stanford-le-Hope.

Learner driver practising junction observations with an independent DVSA-licensed driving instructor in SS17
STAGE 1 · LOCAL ROADS & NURSERY GRIDS

The Stanford interchange and The Manorway

The Stanford interchange is the A13 roundabout where the A1013, the A1014 and the B1007 all meet, and it is the point every lesson here passes through sooner or later. East from it, the A1014 runs as The Manorway down to the London Gateway port by way of the Sorrells roundabout, carrying container traffic all day. A couple of heavy vehicles held at the lights is enough to back the whole approach up, which is why patience and early lane choice are taught here before anything clever.

STAGE 2 · PEAK TRAFFIC & JUNCTION TIMING

Two rush hours, not one

Stanford-le-Hope station puts commuters on the road towards London early, and the port works to its own shifts, so the busy periods do not line up neatly with a school run. Corringham adds its own school traffic along Southend Road. Mid morning is usually the calmest hour on the A1013 and around Corringham town centre, and it is the slot worth asking for.

STAGE 3 · PRACTICAL TEST CENTRE ROUTES

Up to Paycocke Road in Basildon

The practical is taken at Basildon, on Paycocke Road, reached by the A13 and the A176 or by the lanes through Fobbing. Its routes are new town estate roads and roundabouts, which is a different kind of driving from the marsh roads and the port traffic you will have learned on, so ask for several hours over there before the date rather than one run-through.

STAGE 4 · LOCAL TEST INTELLIGENCE

An eight hundred year old church and a creek

St Margaret's has stood here for about eight hundred years and still marks the centre of the old village. The River Hope, a tributary of the Thames, runs through the town and gave it the second half of its name. South of the railway the Mucking flats and marshes are a protected site, and the old landfill above them is now the Thurrock Thameside nature reserve, so the edge of this town is quieter than the middle of it by a long way.

For Stanford Le Hope (SS17) learners: Manual and automatic driving lessons in Stanford-le-Hope (SS17) cost the same: £38.00 per hour pay-as-you-go (£76 for a 2-hour starter session). Block bookings reduce the hourly rate to £37.00/hr for 10 hours (£370), £36.30/hr for 20 hours (£726), £36.10/hr for 30 hours (£1,083), and £35.90/hr for 40 hours (£1,436, saving £84). A £1.99 booking admin fee applies.

For Stanford Le Hope (SS17) learners: According to the official DVSA 2025/26 practical test dataset, Basildon Driving Test Centre (Paycocke Road, Basildon, Essex, SS14 3DR) recorded a 49.1% overall pass rate across 8,359 tests, compared with the 51.2% Great Britain average. Manual candidates achieved 51.2%, automatic candidates achieved 45.2%, and first-attempt candidates achieved 47.2%.

For Stanford Le Hope (SS17) learners: The nearest active official DVSA / Pearson VUE car theory test centre for Stanford-le-Hope (SS17) learners is Basildon Theory Test Centre at 1st Floor, Southgate House, Town Square, Basildon, SS14 1BN (6.2 miles via A13 / A127 / c2c). The official GOV.UK car theory test fee is £23.00, and every Rated Driving learner gets free access to our DVSA Theory & Hazard Perception App.

For Stanford Le Hope (SS17) learners: Basildon, on Paycocke Road, which is the nearest. The table on this page shows its DVSA 2025/26 figure alongside Tilbury, Brentwood and Hornchurch. Tilbury publishes the strongest of the four and Hornchurch the weakest, so the nearest centre is not the highest scoring one and the choice is a genuine trade.

For Stanford Le Hope (SS17) learners: Yes, at the same price as manual. It is worth considering here because so much local driving is slow moving traffic on the A1013 and The Manorway. Choose automatic at the booking stage and the postcode decides which instructors respond. Basildon, 4.7 miles north, passed 45.2% of 2,850 automatic tests in the DVSA 2025/26 figures, against 51.2% for manual.

For Stanford Le Hope (SS17) learners: No. Rated Driving is an agent that matches learners to independent instructors. Your booking reaches somebody who already drives SS17, and the money stays with us until the lesson has been taught before it is released. Licence and DBS checks are done first, and a female instructor can be requested.

For Stanford Le Hope (SS17) learners: Corringham and The Homesteads alongside the town itself, then Fobbing, Horndon on the Hill, Mucking and Linford on the marsh and ridge, and out to Orsett, Baker Street, The Bonners and Bulphan. Put the postcode in and your street is checked rather than the town name.

For Stanford Le Hope (SS17) learners: Read the live figure on GOV.UK at the moment you book, because it shifts constantly. Two things do not shift: a test can be reserved up to 24 weeks ahead, and there is no official queue or priority register on offer from anybody. Tilbury is the other centre within a sensible drive, so there are two diaries to watch rather than one. If you already hold a date that no longer suits, the free Driving Test Swap looks for a learner who would prefer it.

For Stanford Le Hope (SS17) learners: DVSA research puts it at roughly 45 hours of professional lessons plus 22 hours of private practice. Learners here tend to get the hill work and the heavy traffic exposure sooner than average, and to need extra hours on the Basildon estate roads where the test actually happens. An instructor will give you a realistic number after a few sessions.

For Stanford Le Hope (SS17) learners: They make some hours busier and they make you better. Container traffic uses the A1014 and the A13 in volume, so learners in SS17 practise judging gaps against long vehicles and keeping clear of their blind spots as a matter of routine. An instructor will keep your first hours away from The Manorway and bring you onto it deliberately once the basics are steady.
