Manual & automatic
in Southend
Choose weekly manual or automatic driving lessons across SS1, SS2 & SS3 at identical rates (£38/hr pay-as-you-go, £35.90/hr on 40 hours), or book a fast-track intensive course focused on Southend-on-Sea Driving Test Centre routes.
Manual driving lessons (SS1, SS2 & SS3)
A city centre is where manual gearboxes earn their keep, and Southend supplies the full set: signals every few hundred yards on Victoria Avenue, a roundabout where the arterial road meets Queensway, and residential streets off Milton and Southchurch where the parked cars leave one lane between them. A manual pass also leaves every kind of car available to you afterwards.
Book manual tuitionAutomatic driving lessons (SS1, SS2 & SS3)
Only manual tuition is being matched across SS1, SS2 and SS3 at present. No automatic cover is currently offered in the city, and saying so here is better than taking a booking nobody can fill. Instructors do change what they teach and where they work, so put your postcode in and the system will show what is genuinely available on your street.
Book automatic tuitionIntensive driving courses (SS1, SS2 & SS3)
Ask for what you want as you book: a female driving instructor in Southend-on-Sea, an unhurried first hour somewhere quiet, or somebody who teaches the Tickfield routes every week of the year. A DVSA licence and a clear DBS check come before any instructor is put in front of a learner.
Compare intensive coursesRefresher & motorway sessions (SS1, SS2 & SS3)
If a weekly hour is not keeping up with a date already booked, an intensive puts those hours into consecutive days instead, and it is arranged and priced separately from ordinary lessons. Handing your test date to another learner and taking theirs is free, and neither of you learns the other's name.

Test routes in
Southend
The city centre is being rebuilt around you, and the test starts in the middle of it.

Queensway, Victoria Avenue and Cuckoo Corner
Queensway is the A13 acting as a town centre relief road, and it meets the arterial road at a roundabout partway along. North of that, the arterial road comes in through Cuckoo Corner, where both the northern and eastern exits are the A1159, one to the airport and one to Thorpe Bay, and then runs down Victoria Avenue to finish beside Victoria station. Those three carry nearly every Southend test route at some point, and they are learned from the quieter grids in Southchurch and Thorpe Bay first.
Live roadworks on Queensway
Southend City Council began the Better Queensway highway works in December 2025 with Taylor Woodrow, filling in the 1960s underpass to bring the road up to street level, shrinking the roundabout and adding crossings and cycle routes between Victoria station and the seafront. Lane layouts on that stretch have been changing as the work proceeds, which is a reason to take a lesson through it with somebody who drove it last week rather than to avoid it.
Tickfield Avenue, a few streets from the centre
The Tickfield Centre sits off Tickfield Avenue behind Victoria Avenue, close enough to the middle of the city that a test is in real traffic within the first minute rather than working up to it. That is an advantage for a local learner and a trap for one who has only practised at the quiet end of Thorpe Bay. Drive out of the centre a few times before the date.
A city since 2022, and the longest pier anywhere
Southend was granted city status on 1 March 2022 as a memorial to Sir David Amess, making it the second city in Essex after Chelmsford. The pier is the longest pleasure pier in the world and has its own railway. Prittlewell, now a district on the way to the test centre, is the older settlement of the two: an Anglo-Saxon royal burial was found there in 2003.

For Southend On Sea (SS1, SS2 & SS3) learners: According to the official DVSA 2025/26 practical test dataset, Southend-on-Sea Driving Test Centre (Tickfield Centre, Tickfield Avenue, Southend-on-Sea, SS2 6LL) recorded a 47.0% overall pass rate across 7,526 tests, compared with the 51.2% Great Britain average. Manual candidates achieved 49.5%, automatic candidates achieved 41.0%, and first-attempt candidates achieved 51.9%.
For Southend On Sea (SS1, SS2 & SS3) learners: The nearest active official DVSA / Pearson VUE car theory test centre for Southend-on-Sea (SS1, SS2 & SS3) learners is Southend-on-Sea Theory Test Centre at 2nd Floor, Dencora Court, Tylers Avenue, Southend-on-Sea, SS1 2BB (3.2 miles via A127 / A13 / Greater Anglia). The official GOV.UK car theory test fee is £23.00, and every Rated Driving learner gets free access to our DVSA Theory & Hazard Perception App.
For Southend On Sea (SS1, SS2 & SS3) learners: Not currently. The instructors matched across SS1, SS2 and SS3 are teaching in manual cars, and there is no automatic cover in the city at the moment. It is worth entering your postcode anyway, because availability is checked street by street and against what instructors are offering today rather than against a list.
For Southend On Sea (SS1, SS2 & SS3) learners: No. Rated Driving is an agent, matching learners with independent instructors rather than employing them. The one you get already covers your street, holds a DVSA licence and has cleared a DBS check, and a female instructor is available on request. Money is held back until the lesson has taken place and then passed across.
For Southend On Sea (SS1, SS2 & SS3) learners: Prittlewell, Milton and the city centre, Southchurch and Thorpe Bay to the east, North Shoebury, Shoeburyness and Great Wakering beyond them, Eastwood to the west, and out to Barling, Sutton, Stroud Green and Great Stambridge on the Rochford side. Put the postcode in and the check is done on that rather than on the district.
For Southend On Sea (SS1, SS2 & SS3) learners: Yes, both, along with North Shoebury and Great Wakering. Shoeburyness sits at the end of the A13 where the road finally runs out at the sea, and the streets there are a gentler place to start than anything nearer the centre. Southchurch is closer in and gives you the parked-up residential work that a Southend test will almost certainly include.
For Southend On Sea (SS1, SS2 & SS3) learners: It changes constantly, so check GOV.UK on the day you mean to book rather than working from something you were told. Whatever the position, a test can be reserved as much as 24 weeks ahead and the DVSA operates no official waiting list for a sooner one. If you are already holding a date that does not suit, the free Driving Test Swap looks for a learner who would rather have it.
For Southend On Sea (SS1, SS2 & SS3) learners: DVSA research puts the average at 45 hours of professional lessons plus 22 hours of private practice, and the private hours are the ones almost everybody shortchanges. City centre learning tends to add hours rather than save them, because there is nowhere quiet to make the early mistakes. Your instructor will give you a realistic figure once they have seen you drive.
For Southend On Sea (SS1, SS2 & SS3) learners: Yes. Say so at the booking stage and the match narrows to instructors who work at your pace. The wide residential grids at Thorpe Bay and North Shoebury are the usual starting ground, a long way from Queensway, and you set when the centre appears on the itinerary.
