Manual & automatic

Manual driving lessons (SS6)
Nothing in the district tests a clutch like the climb from Websters Way up the High Street to the church, and the parking bays on both sides mean you will be doing it from a standing start behind somebody reversing. A manual licence also keeps automatic cars available to you afterwards, which is why most learners here still begin this way.
Book manual tuitionAutomatic driving lessons (SS6)
An automatic costs the same as a manual on SS rates. With no gears to think about, the hour goes on lane choice, and lane choice is precisely what Rayleigh Weir punishes when the arterial traffic is heavy. An automatic licence covers automatic cars only.
Book automatic tuitionIntensive driving courses (SS6)
Ask for what suits you at the point of booking: a female driving instructor in Rayleigh, a slow start somewhere flat, or somebody who teaches the Basildon routes every week. A DVSA licence and a clear DBS check are both in place before an instructor is offered to you.
Compare intensive coursesRefresher & motorway sessions (SS6)
When a weekly hour is not moving you along fast enough, an intensive runs those hours over consecutive days instead. It is arranged and priced apart from ordinary lessons. Handing your test date to another learner and taking theirs costs nothing, and the two of you stay anonymous.

Test routes in
Rayleigh
A hill town with an arterial road running underneath it, and a test centre in a new town to the west.

The High Street, Websters Way and the Weir
The A129 comes through as the High Street, the B1013 Hockley Road leaves it heading north, and Websters Way takes the traffic that does not want the climb. Those three meeting near the top of the hill is where the middle hours of most Rayleigh lessons go. Below the town, Rayleigh Weir carries the arterial road under the A129 through a signalled underpass, and it is the junction every learner here has to get comfortable with before a test.
Wednesday, and the two rush hours
There is still a small outdoor market in the town on Wednesdays and the High Street parking fills to match it. On any day the arterial road queues back from the Weir in both peaks. Between about ten and two the hill is a different place, and those are the hours worth asking your instructor to hold for you.
West to Basildon
Basildon is the nearer of the two centres, though only just, and getting there from Rayleigh means the arterial road and then new town roundabouts and long dual carriageways, which is a different discipline from the hill you learned on. It publishes 49.1% across 8,359 tests. Spend a couple of hours on that side before the date is fixed.
A Domesday castle and a working windmill
Rayleigh Mount is the motte and bailey of a castle raised by Sweyn of Essex and recorded in Domesday, now National Trust land in the middle of the town. Holy Trinity, at the summit of the High Street, has a Norman chancel and a fifteenth century tower built partly from the castle's own stone. The windmill next to it was restored in 2010 and is open to visitors.

For Rayleigh (SS6) learners: According to the official DVSA 2025/26 practical test dataset, Basildon Driving Test Centre (Paycocke Road, Basildon, Essex, SS14 3DR) recorded a 49.1% overall pass rate across 8,359 tests, compared with the 51.2% Great Britain average. Manual candidates achieved 51.2%, automatic candidates achieved 45.2%, and first-attempt candidates achieved 47.2%.
The nearest active official DVSA / Pearson VUE car theory test centre for Rayleigh (SS6) learners is Southend-on-Sea Theory Test Centre at 2nd Floor, Dencora Court, Tylers Avenue, Southend-on-Sea, SS1 2BB (3.2 miles via A127 / A13 / Greater Anglia). The official GOV.UK car theory test fee is £23.00, and every Rated Driving learner gets free access to our DVSA Theory & Hazard Perception App.
For Rayleigh (SS6) learners: Yes, at the manual rate. It is worth weighing up if the High Street climb is where your hours keep going, since an automatic takes the clutch out of that entirely. Basildon passes automatic candidates at 45.2% against 49.1% overall, so it is a different route to a licence rather than a shorter one.
For Rayleigh (SS6) learners: No. Rated Driving is an agent that puts learners together with independent instructors. Yours will already be working your SS6 street rather than being allocated off a rota, and the money stays with us until the lesson has been delivered. Everyone matched holds a DVSA licence and a clear DBS check, and a female instructor is available on request.
For Rayleigh (SS6) learners: The whole of SS6 including the streets off Downhall Road and Eastwood Road, then Rawreth, Hullbridge, Battlesbridge, Shotgate and Rettendon to the north and west, Hawkwell, Ashingdon and Stroud Green to the east, and Thundersley, Hadleigh, North Benfleet and Bowers Gifford to the south. Coverage is decided by postcode, not by town boundary.
They are about the same distance from Rayleigh, so the decision is genuinely yours. Basildon publishes the higher of the two at 49.1% against 47.0%, and its routes are new town dual carriageways and large roundabouts. Southend's are older residential streets with more parked cars. Choose the one whose roads you have actually driven, and say so before a date is booked.
For Rayleigh (SS6) learners: It changes from one week to the next, so look at GOV.UK on the day you are ready rather than trusting last month's figure. Whatever the queue is doing, two things stay true: dates open 24 weeks in advance, and the DVSA runs no official waiting list. Having two usable centres helps here, because Southend and Basildon rarely fill at the same rate. If you are stuck with an awkward date, the free Driving Test Swap tries to find somebody who wants it.
DVSA research points to around 45 hours of professional lessons plus 22 hours of private practice. The private half is the part people cut, and it shows on the day. Rayleigh gives you hill work, a busy high street and an arterial junction without leaving the town, so the hours tend to be well spent. Your instructor will give you a realistic count early on.
For Rayleigh (SS6) learners: Yes. Say nervous as you book and the match narrows to instructors who go at your pace. The newer estate roads north of the town are wide and quiet, and neither the High Street climb nor the Weir will appear until you say you are ready.
