Manual driving lessons (CM16)
Epping puts a manual learner on a hill almost immediately, because the High Street sits on a ridge and every road off it drops away. Add the forest crossings on the way to the test and clutch control stops being an exercise and becomes ordinary driving. A manual pass also leaves automatics available to you afterwards.
Book manual tuitionAutomatic driving lessons (CM16)
Automatic is charged at the CM rate, the same as manual. Without gears to manage, more of the hour can go on the two things Epping actually asks for, which are lane choice on the B1393 through the town and speed judgement on the unlit roads out towards Toot Hill.
Book automatic tuitionIntensive driving courses (CM16)
Tell us at the booking stage if you want a female driving instructor in Epping, a quiet first hour out at Coopersale, or somebody who takes learners down to Loughton for the test routes most weeks. Licence and DBS checks are completed before an instructor is offered to you.
Compare intensive coursesRefresher & motorway sessions (CM16)
Where the test date is nearer than the weekly hour can cope with, an intensive course runs the hours back to back over a few days. It is booked and priced separately from lessons. If it is the date that is wrong rather than the practice, swapping it with another learner is free and anonymous.

Test routes in
Epping
A ridge, a forest, a motorway junction and an airfield, all inside about three miles.

The B1393, the Wake Arms and the forest road
The High Street is the B1393 and it carries the town's whole length, which is why parking, side turnings and pedestrians all have to be read at once. South of the town the B1393 meets the Wake Arms roundabout, where it joins the A104 Epping New Road, both arms of the A121 at Woodridden Hill and Goldings Hill, and the B172 at Jack's Hill. The pub it is named after was pulled down in the 1980s and the roundabout kept the name.
Market day, and the school run at both ends of town
The Monday market has been held on the High Street since Henry the Third granted the charter in 1253, and it changes the character of the street for the day. Term time mornings do the same in a different way. Ask for a mid morning lesson on a market Monday if you want the version of the High Street that will actually test your observation.
Crown Buildings, 284 High Road, Loughton
The centre is four miles south west, at Crown Buildings on Loughton High Road, and the drive down is either the A121 or the forest road. Loughton publishes 47.0% on 7,376 tests. An Epping learner who has never driven Loughton's own streets is being examined on unfamiliar ground for the whole first half of the test, so ask for hours down there before the date.
Deer, and why the forest roads are slower than
Epping Forest carries fallow and muntjac deer, and there is a sanctuary founded in 1959 holding a herd of black fallow deer across roughly 140 acres. Deer on the A104 and the forest lanes are a real hazard at dusk and dawn, which is one of the reasons local instructors treat those roads as a lesson in their own right rather than as a quick way to get somewhere.

For Epping (CM16) learners: Loughton is closer by under two miles and Enfield publishes almost seven points higher, so this is a genuine trade rather than an obvious answer. What decides it is which roads you have driven: Enfield's routes run through industrial estate roads and the Lee Valley, which are nothing like the forest edge. Rated Driving matches instructors and does not arrange test bookings.
Yes, at the same rate as manual. It is worth considering here because the ridge the town sits on means hill work comes early, and that is where manual learners spend extra hours. Loughton, 4.1 miles south west, passed 45.3% of 3,249 automatic tests in the DVSA 2025/26 figures, against 48.3% for manual. One instructor page offers automatic lessons and says it mostly covers Epping. That instructor is David Barry. Say automatic when you book and the postcode you enter determines which instructors come back to you.
For Epping (CM16) learners: No. Rated Driving is an agent that matches learners to independent instructors. The instructor already covers CM16, both the DVSA licence and the DBS check are confirmed beforehand, a female instructor can be requested, and the payment is held until the lesson has been taught.
For Epping (CM16) learners: The town, Coopersale and Thornwood Common, Epping Upland to the west, Mount End and Colliers Hatch, North Weald and Hastingwood to the north east, Jack's Hatch, Stapleford Tawney, Toot Hill, Greensted Green and Broadley Common. Type a postcode in and the street is checked rather than the name of the parish.
For Epping (CM16) learners: It shifts constantly, so read the live figure on GOV.UK when you are ready to book. Two things hold steady: a test can be reserved as far as 24 weeks ahead, and there is no official queue or priority register, whatever you may be offered elsewhere. Loughton has the better published figure of the two nearest centres, which is why its dates go early. The free Driving Test Swap will look for a learner who wants the date you are holding.
The DVSA's research gives roughly 45 hours with an instructor plus 22 hours of private practice. Epping learners often add a few hours at the end rather than the beginning, because getting comfortable on Loughton's streets before the test is a separate job from learning to drive around CM16.
For Epping (CM16) learners: Yes. North Weald sits about two miles north east beside the airfield and Thornwood Common is just up the B1393, and both are covered by the same instructors working the town. They also give you the rural and national speed limit practice that the syllabus needs and the High Street cannot provide.
