Driving Lessons in Hammersmith and Fulham

Two very different halves of one borough: Hammersmith, where the flyover, the gyratory and the bus station meet in about four hundred metres, and Fulham, which is quiet terraced streets until a match day. Tell us your postcode and we match you with an independent DVSA-licensed instructor, and we hold your payment until after the lesson, so your instructor is only paid once you have had it.

L02 / Free test-date swap

Take a test date
you would actually pick.

Isleworth is a busy centre and its dates go fast, so learners here often take whatever date they can get and then find it is too early or too late. If yours does not suit, another learner may be glad to take it and hand you theirs.

Nothing about your booking changes unless you both say yes. DVSA makes the swap on the call, not us.

What has to be true for a swap
  • You both need a car practical already booked
  • At least 10 full working days before the earlier test Monday to Saturday count as working days. Sundays and public holidays do not.
  • You both need one of your two DVSA changes left Nobody outside DVSA can check how many you have left, so we ask.
  • Same test type and fee band A weekday test can only swap with another weekday test.

Free, no payment details, and neither learner ever sees the other's name. It is new, so the more learners who list a date, the faster it finds you one.

Choose how
you learn

However you want to learn, it is one booking, matched to independent DVSA-licensed instructors covering Hammersmith and Fulham.

04.1 / MANUAL

Manual lessons

The Hammersmith gyratory teaches lane discipline and clutch control at the same time, because you are choosing a lane while creeping. A manual licence lets you drive both types of car.

Book manual lessons
04.2 / AUTOMATIC

Automatic lessons

Automatic costs the same as manual here. On the A4 and around the flyover, taking the clutch out of the equation frees you to watch the lanes, which is where most of the difficulty actually is.

Book automatic lessons
04.3 / YOUR CHOICE

Choose your instructor

Ask for what you need when you book: a female instructor, extra patience, or someone who drives the Isleworth test routes every week. Every instructor is DVSA-licensed and DBS-checked before they take learners.

04.4 / IN A HURRY

Intensive course

Isleworth dates go quickly and weekly lessons can drift for months. An intensive course puts the hours into consecutive days instead. Test-date swaps between learners are free, and you never share your name.

Learning to drive
in Hammersmith and Fulham

Four lanes past a bus station: the gyratory is built up to, never started on.

Roads your instructor will use

The gyratory, the flyover and the A4

Hammersmith gyratory is a one-way system carrying four lanes past a bus station, and the A4 runs beside it at speed. Instructors build up to it: quieter Fulham terraces first, then Talgarth Road, then the gyratory once your lane changes are reliable rather than hopeful.

When to book

Avoid a Fulham match day

Craven Cottage and Stamford Bridge are both in SW6, and on match days the streets around them go from quiet to gridlocked with police cones and pedestrians. Instructors who teach the borough plan around the fixture list, and will tell you when a slot is a bad idea.

Getting to the test

West along the A4 to Isleworth

Your test is at Isleworth, six and a half miles west. The drive out is genuinely useful practice, because the A4 and the Chiswick roundabout are exactly the kind of multi-lane work the test looks for. Ask for a lesson or two on the routes near the centre before test day.

Worth knowing

Parking is the hidden lesson

Reverse parking in Fulham is not a manoeuvre practised in an empty bay, it is a real gap between two cars on a residents' street. Instructors use those streets deliberately, because that is what you will actually do the week after you pass.

What learners said

Learner driver holding a pass certificate after a practical driving test
“It was my first time taking a professional driving lesson, and I was really nervous that I would be very rusty behind the wheel. However, I was put at ease thanks to Shorif! He was extremely patient, very relaxed, and easily created a comfortable and open atmosphere with his ice breakers! His teaching style is exceptional, and suitable for those who are quite shy and nervous. I am very fortunate to have been paired with him!”

Hammersmith and Fulham lesson questions

Straight answers on prices, test centres and booking in Hammersmith and Fulham.

Lessons are £40 an hour across W6, W12 and SW6, and automatic costs exactly the same as manual. Ten hours is £389 and twenty is £764, which brings it to £38.20 an hour. The figures come from the booking system, so the price here is the price you book.

Isleworth, on Fleming Way in Hounslow, about six and a half miles west. The borough has no test centre of its own. Isleworth's current DVSA figures are at the top of this page: 50.4% overall, which is above the London average. Mitcham and Southall are the alternatives and both are further and lower.

Yes, at the same price as manual. Around the gyratory and on the A4 the hard part is lane choice and observation, not gear changes, so an automatic lets you put the whole lesson into the part that is difficult. Say automatic when you book.

No. Rated Driving is an agent, not a school, so you are matched with an independent instructor rather than assigned to one on a rota. We cover W6, W12, SW6 and the surrounding codes, hold your payment until after each lesson, then pass it on. Every instructor is DVSA-licensed and DBS-checked, and you can ask for a female instructor when you book.

Hammersmith, Fulham, Shepherd's Bush, White City, Parsons Green, Sands End, Brook Green, Baron's Court, West Kensington and Fulham Broadway among others. 9 of the borough's 10 postcode districts are shared with a neighbouring borough, so enter your postcode and we check who covers your exact street.

You will, eventually, and it is worth it. Instructors do not start you there. The usual build is quiet Fulham streets, then Fulham Palace Road, then Talgarth Road, then the gyratory itself once your mirror and signal work is automatic rather than deliberate.

Yes. Say nervous when you book and we match you with a patient instructor. Fulham is a good borough for it: there is a large grid of quiet residential streets south of the Fulham Road where you can spend several hours before going near a main road.

Yes. Say refresher when you book. It is a frequent ask here from people who passed elsewhere and have never driven a multi-lane one way system, and those hours go on the gyratory and the A4 rather than on the basics.

Yes. Pass Plus is the DVSA's six-module course for new licence holders, covering motorway, dual carriageway, rural and night driving, and some insurers reduce premiums for it. Instructors covering the borough run it, and the M4 is close enough to make the motorway module straightforward.

They can, before your test if you want. Learners are allowed on motorways in a dual-control car with a fully qualified instructor. The M4 starts a few miles west of Hammersmith, so it fits into a normal lesson more easily than it does from most of London.

DVSA research puts it at 45 hours of professional lessons plus 22 hours of private practice, and learners who get that private practice are markedly more likely to pass first time. Learners in this borough often need a few extra hours on multi-lane junctions, because the local roads throw them at you sooner than a suburb would. Your instructor will give you an honest count after assessing you.

It moves weekly, so check GOV.UK on the day you book. Two things stay true: tests can be booked up to 24 weeks ahead, and there is no official waiting list or cancellation list. Isleworth conducts over twelve thousand tests a year so its dates go quickly. If you already hold a date and want an earlier one, our free Driving Test Swap matches you with another learner who wants yours.
