L02 / Free test-date swap

Take a test date
you would actually pick.

Maidstone is the best centre in the area at 60.2%, which is exactly why its dates go first. If the one you were given is further out than you want, or you are reading ahead and have not booked yet, the date you end up with is not the date you are stuck with.

Nothing about your booking changes unless you both say yes. DVSA makes the swap on the call, not us.

What has to be true for a swap
  • You both need a car practical already booked
  • At least 10 full working days before the earlier test Monday to Saturday count as working days. Sundays and public holidays do not.
  • You both need one of your two DVSA changes left Nobody outside DVSA can check how many you have left, so we ask.
  • Same test type and fee band A weekday test can only swap with another weekday test.

Four ways to learn, one booking, all going to independent DVSA-licensed instructors covering ME.

04.1 / MANUAL

Manual lessons

Clutch control, gears and observations built up together. Most learners in Maidstone start here, and a manual licence lets you drive both types of car. Manual passes at Maidstone run at 63.4% against 53.6% for automatic.

Book manual lessons
04.2 / AUTOMATIC

Automatic lessons

No clutch and no gears leaves more of each hour for judgement: lane discipline on the A229 and the busy right turns near the centre of town. An automatic licence covers automatic cars only.

Choose your instructor

Tell us what matters to you: a female instructor, a calm unhurried start, or someone who knows what Armstrong Road traffic does on a test morning. Every instructor is DVSA-licensed and DBS-checked before they take learners.

04.4 / IN A HURRY

Intensive course

A test booked at Armstrong Road, months on the waiting list and only weeks of readiness? Intensive courses concentrate the same hours into days. Test-date swaps between learners are free, and you never share your name.

Learning to drive
in Maidstone

The Fountain and Bower Grove roundabouts take the longest here to feel easy.

Roads your instructor will use

A229 · A249 · A20

These corridors come up on most Maidstone test routes, and instructors work them in during the weeks before a test, along with the residential streets around Barming and Tovil. Learners regularly name the Bower Grove roundabout and the Fountain roundabout as the ones that take longest to feel comfortable with, along with College Road.

Theory test

Chatham, then Tunbridge Wells

Chatham is the closest theory centre, roughly eight miles north along the A229. Tunbridge Wells is next at about fifteen miles south-west; Sidcup is twenty miles north-west and only worth considering if the other two have no slots.

Getting to your lesson

Three stations, two bus routes

Maidstone East, Maidstone West and Maidstone Barracks all sit centrally. Southeastern runs direct from Ashford in about thirty minutes. By bus, the Arriva 101 comes in from Gillingham and Chatham, and the Stagecoach X3 connects from Canterbury.

The first dinosaur on any coat of arms

Maidstone’s coat of arms features an Iguanodon; a skeleton was found nearby in 1834. The rebel priest John Ball was also freed from Maidstone’s prison in the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381.

Maidstone lesson questions

Straight answers on pass rates, prices, instructors and booking in Maidstone.

Maidstone test centre passed 60.2% of practical tests in the DVSA 2025/26 reporting period, from 8,053 tests. Gillingham is 56.4% and Sevenoaks 59.0%, so you can compare before booking a test.

Lessons across Maidstone's ME postcodes are £39 an hour manual and £40 automatic. Ten-hour blocks come to £379 manual and £389 automatic; twenty hours are £745 and £764, which works out at £37.25 an hour manual. Prices are taken from the booking system’s ME rates, so the price here is the price you pay when you book.

Yes. Ask when you book and the match is limited to female instructors covering your ME postcode. If nobody suitable has space we say so up front rather than quietly matching you with someone else.

Yes. Say automatic when you book. An automatic licence lets you drive automatic cars only, while a manual licence covers both. Manual tests at Maidstone pass at 63.4% against 53.6% for automatic.

Gillingham is about seven miles north-east and Sevenoaks about fourteen miles west. Both are realistic alternatives, and your instructor can build practice on the approaches to whichever you book.

Yes. Tovil, Bearsted, Detling, Aylesford, Yalding, Harrietsham and the other areas on the map are all covered by instructors working the Maidstone area. Enter your postcode to check yours.

Yes. Say nervous when you book and the match goes to a patient instructor. First lessons can start in Bearsted or Allington rather than the town centre, and nothing moves to the busy roads until you say so.

Yes. Book with your postcode and say refresher. Lessons focus on your actual gaps, from town-centre lane choice to the M20 junctions. It works the same if you passed a decade ago or have just moved somewhere that finally needs a car.

Yes. Pass Plus is the DVSA's six-module course for new drivers, covering motorways, night and all-weather driving, and some insurers discount for it. Instructors covering Maidstone's ME postcodes run it, with the M20 minutes away.

They can, before the test: learners are allowed on motorways in a dual-control car with a fully qualified instructor. Maidstone sits on the M20, so a motorway hour is easy to build into a later lesson.

The DVSA's researched average is about 45 hours of lessons plus private practice. Maidstone's mix of town traffic, fast A-roads and the M20 covers most of what a new driver ever meets, so hours here go a long way; your instructor will give you a real estimate after the first lessons.

No. Rated Driving is an agent, not a school. We match you with independent DVSA-licensed instructors who cover your ME postcode, and we hold your payment until after each lesson before passing it on. Say what you need when you book, a female instructor included, and every instructor is DBS-checked before taking learners.

It moves week by week, so check GOV.UK on the day you book rather than trusting a number from last month. Two things stay true: tests can be booked up to 24 weeks ahead, and there is no official waiting list or cancellation list, whatever other sites offer. Maidstone is the strongest centre in the area at 60.2%, which is exactly why its dates go first, so Gillingham and Sevenoaks are worth checking alongside it. If you already hold a date and want an earlier one, our free Driving Test Swap matches you with another learner who wants yours.
