Driving Lessons in Haringey

Haringey has two test centres inside the borough, which not every London borough can say. Wood Green and Tottenham are barely two miles apart and they do not publish the same pass rate, so learners here have a genuine choice that costs them nothing in travel. Tell us your postcode and we match you with an independent DVSA-licensed instructor, and we hold your payment until after the lesson.

L02 / Free test-date swap

Take a test date
you would actually pick.

Two centres two miles apart means learners here often hold a date at one when the other would have suited them better. Another learner may be glad to take yours and hand you theirs.

Nothing about your booking changes unless you both say yes. DVSA makes the swap on the call, not us.

What has to be true for a swap
  • You both need a car practical already booked
  • At least 10 full working days before the earlier test Monday to Saturday count as working days. Sundays and public holidays do not.
  • You both need one of your two DVSA changes left Nobody outside DVSA can check how many you have left, so we ask.
  • Same test type and fee band A weekday test can only swap with another weekday test.

Choose how
you learn

However you want to learn, it is one booking, matched to independent DVSA-licensed instructors covering Haringey.

04.1 / MANUAL

Manual lessons

The climb from Tottenham up to Muswell Hill and Highgate is one of the steepest sustained gradients in London, which makes hill starts a real skill here rather than a demonstration. A manual licence lets you drive both types of car.

Book manual lessons
04.2 / AUTOMATIC

Automatic lessons

Automatic costs the same as manual here. On Haringey's gradients that removes the thing most learners stall on, and on the High Road it turns waiting time into observation time.

04.4 / IN A HURRY

Intensive course

Two centres in the borough means there is usually a date to be had, and an intensive course is how you are ready for it. Test-date swaps between learners are free, and you never share your name.

Learning to drive
in Haringey

Two test centres inside the borough, two miles apart, and no travel either way.

Driving instructor and learner beside a dual-control car on a residential street
Roads your instructor will use

The High Road, and then the hill

Tottenham High Road is a long congested bus corridor with parked obstruction on both sides. Two miles west the ground rises hard towards Muswell Hill and Highgate. Instructors here teach the hill first, because the car is a more patient teacher than the High Road traffic.

When to book

Match days at White Hart Lane

A fixture at the stadium closes roads and fills every approach for hours either side, and it affects the Tottenham centre's surroundings directly. Instructors who teach the borough check the fixture list, and it is worth naming your available days when you book.

Getting to the test

Two centres, no travel penalty

Wood Green and Tottenham are both inside the borough and about two miles apart, and Tottenham publishes 48.9% against Wood Green's 46.8%. Almost no London learner gets a choice like that without a journey attached. Ask your instructor which routes suit you.

Worth knowing

Alexandra Palace is a hill start test

The approach roads to Ally Pally are steep, and they curve, and there are usually cars parked along them. Instructors use them deliberately, because a hill start on a bend with a car close behind is the version you will actually meet after you pass.

Haringey lesson questions

Straight answers on prices, test centres and booking in Haringey.

Lessons are £40 an hour across N4, N8 and N22, and automatic costs exactly the same as manual. Ten hours is £389 and twenty is £764, which brings it to £38.20 an hour. The figures come from the booking system, so the price here is the price you book.

Haringey has two inside it: Wood Green, whose current DVSA figures are at the top of this page, and Tottenham about two miles east. Barnet, outside the borough to the north west, is a third option and publishes the highest rate of the three.

Tottenham publishes 48.9% against Wood Green's 46.8%, so on the figures Tottenham has the edge, and neither involves a journey out of the borough. Pass rates reflect the mix of candidates as well as the roads, so treat it as a reason to ask your instructor which routes suit your driving rather than as a guarantee.

Yes, at the same price as manual. It is worth considering here because of the gradient up towards Muswell Hill and Highgate, which is where manual learners lose the most hours. Say automatic when you book.

No. Rated Driving is an agent rather than a school, which is why the instructor who turns up is a local independent working N postcodes and not an employee sent from a depot. We hold your payment until after each lesson, then pass it on. Every instructor is DVSA-licensed and DBS-checked, and you can ask for a female instructor.

Wood Green, Tottenham, Crouch End, Hornsey, Muswell Hill, Highgate, Harringay, Seven Sisters, Bruce Grove and Bowes Park among others. All 11 of the borough's postcode districts are shared with a neighbouring borough, so enter your postcode and we check who covers your exact street.

Yes. Say nervous when you book and we match you with a patient instructor. The residential streets around Bowes Park and Stroud Green are quiet enough for a first few hours before you meet the High Road or the hills.

Yes. Say refresher when you book. Hill starts and the Tottenham High Road bus corridor are the two things people most often want the hours spent on here.

Yes. Pass Plus is the DVSA's six-module course for new licence holders, covering motorway, dual carriageway, rural and night driving, and some insurers reduce premiums for it. Instructors covering the borough run it, with the faster modules usually done north towards the M25.

They can, before your test if you want. Learners are allowed on motorways in a dual-control car with a fully qualified instructor. The M25 is north of the borough, so it usually sits in a longer lesson booked for the purpose.

DVSA research puts it at 45 hours of professional lessons plus 22 hours of private practice, and learners who get that private practice are markedly more likely to pass first time. The hills tend to add a few early on, and many learners here do not have a car to practise in between lessons. Your instructor will give you an honest count after assessing you.

It moves weekly, so check GOV.UK on the day you book. Two things stay true: tests can be booked up to 24 weeks ahead, and there is no official waiting list or cancellation list. Having two centres in the borough is the real advantage, because when one is full the other often is not. If you already hold a date and want an earlier one, our free Driving Test Swap matches you with another learner who wants yours.
